Veezhinathan Kamakoti is the Director of IIT Madras and a leading academic in cybersecurity and computer science. His research spans hardware–software security, cryptography, and cyber-physical systems security. Kamakoti is best known for leading the team behind “Shakti,” India’s first indigenous microprocessor, developed to reduce reliance on imported chips for communication and defense applications.
Beyond research, he has played a key role in national policy. He chaired the AI Task Force appointed by the Ministry of Commerce and serves as a member of the National Security Advisory Council.
At IIT Madras, Kamakoti spearheaded the creation of the Centre for Cybersecurity, Trust and Reliability (CyStar), which drives research in blockchain, quantum security, AI security, and IoT security in collaboration with government and industry partners. A recognized thought leader, the professor continues to bridge academia, industry, and policy in advancing India’s capabilities in cybersecurity and emerging technologies.
