Towards Superintelligence: Nvidia Puts $100B in OpenAI
As part of the agreement, OpenAI will earmark Nvidia as its preferred strategic compute and networking partner for its AI factory growth plans.

On Monday, Nvidia Corp. and OpenAI announced a strategic partnership to deploy at least 10 gigawatts of Nvidia systems for the startup’s next-generation AI infrastructure to achieve superintelligence, along with an investment of $100 billion from the chipmaker.
This follows Nvidia’s $5 billion strategic investment in rival Intel, as tech giants race to secure the chips and energy needed to dominate the fast-growing AI market.
Historic AI Investment
Having collaborated with OpenAI over the decade, Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of Nvidia, said, “This investment and infrastructure partnership mark the next leap forward—deploying 10 gigawatts to power the next era of intelligence.”
The foundation of this partnership began in 2016, when Huang hand-delivered the first Nvidia DGX system to Sam Altman and his team. The former believes it to be “the biggest AI infrastructure project in history,” CNBC reported.
As part of the agreement, OpenAI will name Nvidia its preferred strategic partner for compute and networking as it grows its AI factory. Both companies will also co-optimize their roadmaps for OpenAI’s model and infrastructure software and Nvidia’s hardware and software.
“Everything starts with compute,” said Altman, co-founder and CEO of OpenAI, adding, “Compute infrastructure will be the basis for the economy of the future.” He believes no other partner would have been a fit, stating that only Nvidia “can do this at this kind of scale, at this kind of speed,” to CNBC.
“We’ve utilized their platform to create AI systems that hundreds of millions of people use every day,” said Greg Brockman, co-founder and President, OpenAI.
The partnership will build upon the deep work of the two AI giants done in association with collaborators, including Microsoft, Oracle, SoftBank, and Stargate. The plan is to have the first phase come online in the second half of 2026 using Nvidia’s Vera Rubin platform.
The fine print of the partnership will be finalised by Nvidia and OpenAI in the coming weeks.
