IBM Corp. will set up one of India’s first IBM quantum computers in Amaravati, with the system expected to be commissioned by September 2026, in a boost to Andhra Pradesh’s plan to build a quantum technology ecosystem.

The timeline was confirmed by IBM Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Arvind Krishna at an event in the US, The Press Trust of India reported.

The system will be part of Quantum Valley, Andhra Pradesh’s flagship initiative to position Amaravati as a hub for quantum technologies.

IBM, Tata Consultancy Services Ltd and the Andhra Pradesh government had announced plans in May 2025 to deploy an IBM Quantum System Two at the Quantum Valley Tech Park.

The system was envisaged with a 156-qubit Heron quantum processor, subject to export licenses and definitive agreements.

Krishna said quantum computing is two to three years away from delivering significant commercial value across sectors such as pharmaceuticals, materials science, financial services, logistics, cybersecurity and advanced artificial intelligence.

The Andhra Pradesh government said the project will help build capabilities in quantum computing, quantum communication, quantum sensing and workforce development by bringing together government, industry, academic institutions and startups.

With the IBM system expected to become operational in Amaravati next year, the state is seeking to give researchers, startups and enterprises access to advanced quantum infrastructure and establish itself as a center for quantum innovation in India.
